I decided to copy Dany's idea for the song of the week thread. Basically, I'll ask a random question every Thursday and you guys answer it.
If you were a descendent of a very infamous person (i.e. Hitler, Charles Manson, etc) and had their last name, would you change your last name or keep it for the legacy of your family?
I would definitely change my last name, no doubt about it. Especially, if Hitler was my grandfather or some other relative of mine. When you have a very tainted family name, you don't want people associating you to your relative's crimes every time you mention your full name. My family name is the same as a current world leader's. It's not very tainted but if I were to go to certain countries, I would probably get some people freaking out.

You dont need to do. Usually very famous person are not using their real name. For that matter here, I got the same family name as a very very popular artist from the beginning of the century La Bolduc. People tease me and all but my family related to her are very far, quite inexistant. I just know all Bolduc got connection since only one came to Canada back then: Louis Bolduc. He was fired from the French royal court, he stole alot of money and such. He was Irish. Oh yeah, behind those dark hair is hiden a ginger mane and yes I got tones of freakles in my younger times.

No, what I meant was infamous. Not famous. Someone who was brutal and who went down in history with a very tainted name and reputation. Hitler is a really good example of this.

My ancestor was really infamous. I still have my name. He was bannish from the king court in France cause of some money fraud. That is enough to be considered infamous.

Yeah, if I was called hitler, of course I would change Hmm. Manson is a tougher one. But if my last name was "the ripper" I would most likely change it too. Kidding. But seriously, YES, I would change it if I was called hitler. Or, i would beg my parents to change it.

i guess it's a good thing he never reproduced. i'd also probably change my last name. i mean, what kind of a legacy is that to carry down? i'd probably settle with my altar ego name of "euclid o'harrah" or "cornelius talmidge". i use cornelius when ever i have to put my name on pirated software or on online apllications.

Depends. If my name would've been Stalin or Hitler, I'd change it. If it was some other name, which I had shared with an ancestor(say Manson) but it wasn't that uncommon, I would've kept it.
You can't blame the present for actions in the past.
